In a world where people are so busy doing something, we often times use that “something” as an excuse not to do what we really should be doing. Whether it’s checking email a hundred times a day, updating status on Facebook and/or Twitter or just goofing off (as my grade school teachers used to say), we often procrastinate and use excuses as a means for not getting things done.
Today I want to encourage you to stop using excuses. Whatever it is that you keep coming up with a “reason” why you are not pursuing your passion, get rid of it. From lack of money, to lack of faith, to lack of confidence, it’s easy to get side tracked with excuses.
Here’s what I want you to do: Write down what it is that you really want to do. Right down all the excuses you can think of that’s keeping you from doing it. Then, right down why you really want to do it. Your motivation should remove all the excuses if that motivation is in the right place.
For example, since the birth of my daughter (after an ample recovery), I wanted to start back working out. I would make up every excuse in the book why I couldn’t work out. Didn’t have time. Didn’t have energy. Didn’t have the right equiment (we had an elipitcal machine); Needed some weights (could have used things around the house); Needed a trainer (bought a DVD); Needed to wake up early (YIKES, that was unrealistic); etc. etc. I mean, seriously, I even said I needed new workout clothes to really get going.
So after I got tired of myself coming up with excuses, I coached myself on this situation and did exactly what I am asking you to do. I figured out my motivation for wanting to workout and that was to be healthy and have more energy for all the things God has called me to do. Once I got clear on my motive, I rejoined the gym and have been consistenly working out for a minimum of three times a week (which is the goal I set for myself). I now have a ton more energy and I feel so good after I finish!
One of my secrets: I only do group excercise classes. They are at a specific time and there are others there to encourage me and who hold me accoutable (sort of like what I do with my coaching clients). Encouragement and accountability really works! It’s what works for me! Figure out what works for you and do that!
So you see, we can make excuses until we are blue in the face, but once we realize our true motive, excuses don’t stand a chance.
Coaching Question:
What excuse(s) is holding you back from doing what you know you need/want to do? Leave me a comment and let me know.
